Gowran Park's EBF juvenile maidens carry the day on easy ground

There is no festival to hang Tuesday on. The best of the domestic action is a compact Irish flat card at Gowran Park worth a shade over €70,000, and the shape of it — three Irish Stallion Farms EBF maidens over seven furlongs, back to back, each of them heavily subscribed — makes the first hour the most interesting part of the day either side of the Irish Sea. Ripon supplies the better British racing, with Lingfield, Brighton and an evening Wolverhampton card filling in.

Ground and weather

Our record for Gowran is soft. The published going report on the day reads yielding to soft, and the racecourse description offered on the morning racecard was yielding with soft in places under cloud, with Horse Racing Ireland's summary noting the surface had come after a dry day. Take that as ground that is genuinely easy but drying rather than deteriorating, which matters for the later races: a maiden run at 14:00 on soft-ish turf and one run at 15:00 may not be quite the same test. Ripon is soft, which is the more emphatic description of the two, though the Met Office forecast for the track was for a largely dry afternoon with rain not arriving until late in the evening and gusts touching the high twenties. Lingfield and Wolverhampton are standard on the artificial surfaces, Brighton good.

The Gowran maidens

Gowran is right-handed, undulating and finishes with a stiff climb, and seven furlongs on soft ground there is a searching first assignment for a two-year-old. It is effectively a mile in terms of what it asks. Big fields on easy ground also tend to punish the horse who is buried out the back and asked to make up ground into the hill, and the low numbers have historically been the place to be; the Racing Post's Irish analyst made a point of the low draw in the fillies' race.

The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden (14:00) was declared 19-strong for €13,200 to the winner and had shed a couple by the time the racecard settled at 15 or 16 runners. The obvious question is how many of these have the constitution for the ground first time up. Among those with something to prove is Snowing, who went off favourite for a six-furlong Curragh maiden last month and did not deliver; the step up in trip and the softer surface change the examination rather than repeat it. Acquilyx, from John Joseph Murphy's yard with Jack Sheridan booked, is one of the newcomers drawn wide, which on this track and this ground is not where you want to be.

The Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden at 14:30 is the same prize, the same trip and a similarly unwieldy field of 18 declared. Colts' maidens at this stage of the season are where the better yards start unveiling horses with next spring in mind, and on soft ground the ones bred to want a mile in due course usually look the more comfortable. The Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at 15:00, for three-year-olds and up, is the poor relation in prize terms at €9,000 but arguably the more readable race, because most of these have a body of form on record and there is less guesswork about ground and fitness.

The 1xBet.ie Handicap at 15:30 is a 12-runner three-year-old event off 0-85 and the one race in the sequence where a horse can be laid out. Gowran's finish tends to sort out the ones being ridden for luck from the ones travelling; on soft ground over seven, holding a position from a decent draw is worth more than a turn of foot.

Britain

Ripon's card is worth £36,116 across seven, with the £12,000 handicap for horses rated 61-80 the feature and Kind Touch among those with course form to lean on. Soft ground at Ripon regularly turns the sprints into slogs and rewards the front-running type who can sustain a gallop rather than quicken off one. Brighton's evening fields look thin, several races down to six runners, and Wolverhampton's eight-race card runs to 20:30. There is also an Arabian fixture at Lingfield alongside the thoroughbred meeting.

Today's selection

Our ratings have not produced a qualifying selection from today's card. Nothing on this Tuesday met the thresholds, and where the numbers do not make a case we do not manufacture one.
