York's Garrowby Stakes leads a two-track SundaySunday reduces to a pair of British fixtures, and the weight of the day sits at York, where seven races carry £122,161 in prize money and the Listed Starman At Tally Ho Stud Garrowby Stakes at 15:50 is worth £39,697 to the winner from a £70,000 pot. Fontwell's six-race jumps card, staged as the track's Family Festival, is the supporting act with £25,166 across the afternoon — but it houses today's selection. Ground and weatherOur record for York is Good to Soft. The racecourse's own update at 8.30 this morning described the ground as good, good to soft in places, so the strong likelihood is that the surface is drying rather than easing. The Met Office picture at 8am had morning cloud and outbreaks of rain over England and Wales clearing north-eastwards by early afternoon, with fine and warm conditions following, and only the north and west staying unsettled. That points to a track that gets no further rain during racing and a going description that, if anything, edges towards the quicker end as the day goes on. In the south, forecasters had the morning rain clearing by mid-afternoon with sunshine and very warm temperatures behind it, which fits Fontwell's recorded good ground holding. Anyone judging York form by the clock today should treat the early races as the reliable guide and allow that the ground may ride marginally faster than described by the closing stages. The Garrowby: nine runners, 6f, and a race that punishes hesitationThe conditions matter as much as the trip. This is confined to horses that have not won a Group 1 or Group 2 since the end of March, with three-year-old colts and geldings set 9st 2lb, older colts and geldings 9st 4lb, fillies 3lb lighter in each case and a 2lb weight-for-age allowance to the Classic generation. Penalties run to 3lb for a Listed winner since March and 5lb for a Group 3 winner. In practice that produces a familiar Garrowby profile: unexposed and improving handicappers stepping up in grade against Listed-class horses carrying a penalty, with the exposed Group performers filtered out. York's straight six is a searching one. It is wide, essentially flat, and it does not reward horses that need cover or a gap. With nine runners there will be no natural far-side and near-side split, so the field should race as a single group and the draw becomes less of an obstacle than the pace. The question is whether there is enough early speed to set the race up for a closer. If a front-runner is left alone, a strong-travelling type ridden with restraint has a long way to make up in a straight line; if two or three go hard, the race falls to whichever runner is still travelling at the two-furlong pole. Ease in the ground, to the extent it exists, blunts the pure speedsters and lengthens the closing stages, which historically flatters horses with a bit of size and a stride rather than the quick, sharp sprinter. The handicapsThe rest of the York card is a punter's exercise in traffic. The Saltmoore Collection Handicap at 15:15 has 17 runners over 1m2f56y, the Eboracum Security Handicap at 16:25 has 15 over seven furlongs, and the Coopers Marquees Apprentice Handicap at 17:00 has 19 over 7f 192y. Big fields on a galloping track with a long run to the line usually mean that the finish is contested by horses ridden with patience, but the apprentice race adds an extra variable: 19 riders claiming, over a trip that asks for judgement of pace, is a recipe for a muddling middle section and a sprint home. Fontwell and today's selectionFontwell could hardly be more different in character. The figure-of-eight hurdle course is all turns, undulations and rhythm, and it asks a horse to jump quickly out of a bend rather than to gallop in a straight line. Good ground on a track like this favours the slick and the handy, and small fields tend to produce tactical races rather than true staying tests. Our selection is County Champs, trained by Chris Gordon and ridden by Miss Fern O'Brien in the 14:20 conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle over 2m 5f 164y. Six runners is a small field for a staying handicap hurdle, and the likely shape is a steady early tempo with the race decided from the second-last. Gordon's Sussex base and his familiarity with Fontwell are relevant; so is the fact that in a race for claiming riders, weight concessions can be significant over a trip this far. County Champs was 4.33 in the morning market. Today’s free selectionToday's free selection is County Champs (Chris Gordon), number 4 in the 14:20 at Fontwell. Our strongest selection on today's card.
