Windsor's Winter Hill Stakes Headlines a Modest MondayThe only black type on offer in Britain or Ireland today comes at 16:15 at Windsor, where the Weatherbys Global Stallions App Winter Hill Stakes (Group 3) draws seven runners over 1m2f for £53,874 on going recorded as good. The race has a habit of producing better horses than its grade suggests — recent winners include My Prospero for William Haggas in 2024 and Silawi in 2025, who went on to take the Group 1 Canadian International — and Sir Michael Stoute is its most successful trainer with nine victories. The story is the return of Raaheeb. Owen Burrows' colt is a full-brother to the multiple Group 1 winners Baaeed and Hukum and looked a live Derby prospect after an impressive reappearance at Sandown in the spring, but he has not been seen for around 71 days and drops back in trip and grade here. Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold indicated the plan was always contingent on the ground not turning too quick, and made clear the horse has been given time after presenting physically light earlier in the season, with next year the real target. Good ground at Windsor is about as much as connections could ask for. Rossa Ryan takes the ride. The opposition is not a formality. Godolphin are doubly represented through Charlie Appleby's Maho Bay and the John and Thady Gosden-trained Morris Dancer, Ralph Beckett runs recent Salisbury Listed winner On Message, and the field is completed by the Gosdens' Harmonics, Jack Channon's Crest Of Fire and Andrew Balding's Venetian Prince. Seven runners round Windsor's figure-of-eight rarely produces a searching gallop, and the sharp final turn into the straight punishes anything asked to make up ground wide. With no obvious front-runner among the Group performers, the likely shape is a muddling one that turns into a sprint from three furlongs out — which is not what a horse coming off a summer break wants, and is a legitimate concern against Raaheeb whatever his figures say. On Message arrives with the freshest winning form and the most straightforward preparation. Galway Opens Its Autumn Two-Day MeetingBallybrit returns with the first of a two-day September fixture, tonight's eight-race jumps card running from 16:07 to 19:41 for €61,200 in prize money. Our records show good ground; the meeting has also been reported as taking place on yielding turf, so treat conditions as softer than midsummer and read the going updates before the first. The card opens with the Kenny Developments Maiden Hurdle over 2m160y, has the Deacy Gilligan Hurdle at 17:09 as its most valuable race at €10,800, and closes with a mares' bumper at 19:41. The Deacy Gilligan, over 2m5f129y with eight declared, is the sort of contest where the Galway hill sorts out the merely quick from the genuinely staying — the climb from the home turn is unforgiving and horses that travel into the straight on the bridle frequently do not finish there. Today's SelectionOur selection is Smallcraftwarning, trained by John Patrick Ryan and ridden by Daniel King, in the 19:11 BoyleSports Handicap Chase at Galway, an 11-runner 0-115 handicap over 2m6f111y worth €9,000. He is quoted around 7/2 this morning. The trip and the track are the whole question. Two and three-quarter miles at Ballybrit with a full field is an attritional test, the fences come thick and fast down the back, and a modest handicap over that distance tends to be won by a horse that jumps economically and is still travelling at the second-last rather than by a proven galloper reeled in from the rear. If the ground has genuine ease in it, that emphasis on stamina and jumping only sharpens. ElsewhereNewton Abbot (14:00, seven races, good) and Perth (14:20, six races, good) fill out the jumps programme. The Perth feature at 15:50, a Class E handicap chase over 2m7f180y, has attracted only five, which usually means a steadily run race and a premium on positioning. Windsor's supporting card is worth a look beyond the feature: Oisin Murphy takes the ride on Romotoso for William Knight in the 16:45 fillies' novice, and she heads the betting forecast at 2/1. Wolverhampton's all-weather card (16:57, eight races, standard) closes the day at 20:30.
