Galway's Oyster Stakes Is the Day's Only Black TypeThe Ardilaun Hotel Irish EBF Oyster Stakes at 18:30 is the one Listed contest on either side of the Irish Sea today, and with 16 declared over a mile and a half on soft ground it is the race the day turns on. Galway's own ground report on Monday read soft on the Flat, so nothing in the description has been softened by optimism. The card records soft for the Oyster Stakes, and that is the figure to work from. The Oyster Stakes has been part of the Galway September programme since 1991 and is run over roughly 1m4f42y for fillies and mares from three years upwards. Galway's Flat track is tight, with a testing pull to the line, and a soft surface over that trip turns it into an exercise in staying rather than finishing speed. Sixteen runners around two turns of a sharp circuit also means the race is likely to be won from a handy, wide-of-a-rival position rather than off a slow tempo and a wall of horses. The key questions are therefore stamina and constitution rather than class. Three-year-olds meeting older mares get a weight allowance, but on ground this holding the argument usually swings towards the mare with proven form when the going is bad. Anything whose best work has come on a quicker surface or over shorter has a good deal to prove here. There is a second 16-runner event over the same trip immediately afterwards, the BoyleSports Apprentice Handicap at 19:00, which closes an eight-race Galway card worth a shade over £100,000 in total and running from 15:43 to 19:30. Earlier, the Irish EBF Median Sires Series Fillies Maiden at 17:30 brings 12 juvenile fillies over seven furlongs on the same soft ground. Maidens on that surface tend to be won by size and scope rather than precocity, and it is worth watching which of the bigger yards persist with their better-bred fillies once the ground is confirmed. Goodwood: Good, With Soft In PlacesGoodwood is officially good, good to soft in places, with a GoingStick reading of 7.2 and rail movements in operation across the afternoon. That is a materially quicker surface than Galway's, and the rail changes matter on a track where the run down from the top bend already rewards horses that can be settled off the pace and produced late. The seven-race card includes two EBF features. The British EBF Peter Willett Future Stayers' Maiden at 14:05 puts nine unexposed types over a mile, with Noble Traveller among them, and races of this description regularly turn up horses who improve considerably for the step up in distance next season. The Royal Sussex Regiment EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes at 14:40 has attracted only six over seven furlongs, Sorrengail included; small conditions-race fields at Goodwood can turn tactical, and a fast-run seven is not guaranteed. The most competitive heat looks the 15:50 handicap over two miles, worth £25,000 in guaranteed prize money for horses rated 81 to 100, with Manxman at the head of the weights on a mark of 93 and Synergism among the entries. Two miles at Goodwood asks a stayer to negotiate a switchback track as well as the distance, and the ground drying towards good should suit the more mobile sort. Elsewhere, and Today's SelectionLeicester and Catterick both run eight-race cards on Flat surfaces, with Bangor-On-Dee providing the day's jumping across six races from 16:38. Catterick stages Racing TV Club Day, and the card is described as good. Our selection is Willowinghurn, trained by David O'Meara and ridden by Daniel Tudhope, in the 16:11 Every Race Live On RTV Handicap over 7f 6y at Catterick, one of 12 declared and 6.5 in the morning market. Catterick's sharp, undulating seven furlongs, with its downhill run into the short straight, rewards horses who can hold a position early and are not knocked out of their stride by the camber. That is a track-and-trip profile that suits a jockey familiar with the place, and Tudhope's association with the O'Meara yard needs no introduction. Today’s free selectionToday's free selection is Willowinghurn (David O'Meara), number 7 in the 16:11 at Catterick. This is our strongest selection of the day: every measure we track points the same way. The race is the Every Race Live On RTV Handicap (Class F) over 7f 6y on good ground with 12 runners. Morning price 6.50. Our rated price is 5.82. We have 14 further selections on today's card, reserved for subscribers.
